The Occupation of Iraq Will Continue

"On our side: Feingold, Harkin, Boxer, Kennedy, Kerry, and Byrd.
On their side: Hillary Clinton and the other 92."-from the post by David Swanson, "Senate Rejects U.S. Troop Pullout in Iraq" on AfterDowningStreet.org. The House did the same thing.

"Poll: Majority wants Iraq pullout date set" from CNN underscores the point.

My feeling on Iraq is this: it was a bad idea from the beginning, but now that we've taken out Saddam out, emboldened Iran, brought Al Qaeda into Iraq and set off a regional conflict between Sunnis and Shia, it is our responsibility to fix things as best we can.

The current administration policy is not fixing things. They're simply trying to hold the level of violence and carnage down for as long as they can before they can reasonably declare "victory" and get out.

But the situation in Iraq is getting worse, not better. Even after the "good news" of Zaraqwi's death and the naming of scurity ministers to al-Maliki's gov't, the violence continues unabted. Al-Maliki's gov't cannot handle it, the U.S. does not have enough troops to deal with it - and so on it goes.

The GOP patriots ought to do one of two things:

a) institute a draft, send hundreds of thousands more troops to Iraq, increase taxes and stop funding the war effort off the next generation, say to the world "we fucked up, we need help, send forces to iraq along with our additional forces in order to stem this burgeoning regional conflcit"
b) say "Fuck it...we may as well pull out now because our current policy is untenable and counterproductive in the long run and since we don't have the political will or courage to REALLY win this thing, we may as well pull out.

Since the GOP patriots don't have the political will to do a), they may as well do b) and just pull out. Because the way things are going in Iraq, this thing's only going to get worse. And there's nothing worse than watching young Americans dying in a war that continues so that Karl Rove and George Bush can save face.

BTW, I added you to my blog roll. Thanks for coming over. I'll make your blog a regular stop as well.

I think your motives are very admirable regarding "fixing things" but I can't imagine how that can happen.
